My favorite books for Christian writers (and wannabe writers)

The first thing I do whenever I feel the Lord prompting me to tackle another big writing assignment is go to my shelves and grab some inspiration from others who “get me.” When God called me to start writing Woven (the Bible study I’m working on now), I knew I would need constant, biblical encouragement to persevere and finish even if the process grew difficult.

Any time I speak at an event, I always get at least one person who comes up to me afterwards and tells me that she also feels God calling her to write. Perhaps that’s you.

Do you have a story that God has put on your heart? Do you have a book in your soul that is begging to burst forth and land upon a blank page? If so, you’re not alone. You’re not alone in your calling, but you’re also not alone in your struggles.

I struggle every day as a writer. I need constant inspiration. Constant comfort. Constant biblical encouragement. Here’s where I go, and if you’re considering putting a story on paper, I invite you to pick one of these fabulous books and ask God to use it in your daily quiet time.

Writing for the Soul, Jerry B. Jenkins

Jerry uses his own journey as a writer to pull wisdom and advice for those who wish to follow in his footsteps. He is honest, straightforward and extremely helpful. After writing over 150 books, he gets Christian writers. I’ve read this book several times and often feel as if he’s writing just to me.

 A Novel Idea, ChiLibris

This is a collection of practical tips from best-selling Christian fiction writers such as Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury, Randy Alcorn and Terri Blackstock. Even though I rarely write fiction myself, I found their advice applicable to any type of writing.

Writers in the Spirit, Carol Rottman

This is a devotional for writers mixed with tips, application and writing challenges. Whether you’re just beginning or are a seasoned writer, you will find inspiration in this book.

The Making of a Christian Bestseller, Ann Byle

This is another compilation of practical and inspirational tips from some of the “greats” in Christian writing. It takes its advice one step beyond the actual writing process to explore the publishing side as well.

Write His Answer, Marlene Bagnull

This was the devotional book that I used when I wrote my very first book, so it holds a special place in my heart. Above all writing is a calling, and this book helped me find the courage to say yes when God called me to do something so scary.

Light for the Writer’s Soul, Global Christian Writers

I like to refer to this book as “That time Jerry B. Jenkins and I wrote a book together.” It’s a collection of 100 short devotionals by writers from all over world, and Jerry Jenkins and I both have essays published in this book. I love it because it reminds me that no matter how “big” or “small” the writer, the calling is the same in every nation.

Has God called you to be a writer? What is He calling you to write, and what books or resources would you add to my list?
